Background and Objective: Thalassemia is a genetic
disease. This disease is cured and cared by using
supportive treatments such as blood transfusion, and
iron chelator. The purpose of this research was to
evaluate the results of desferrioxamine administration
by retained scalp vein into subcutaneous in
thalassemic patients.
Methods: This investigation aimed to determine 30
thalassemic patients, age up to 12 years old, who
attended the pediatrics clinic at Srinagarind hospital
during January - October 2013. The research tool was
questionnaires. The data were analyzed by using
frequency, percentage, means and standard deviation.
Results: The use of desferrioxamine administration by
retained scalp vein into subcutaneous in thalassemic
patients, have reduced iron levels in 50 percent of
the patients. All of the patients accounted for 100
percent able to prepare medication and correctly
inject themselves. There satisfactions were in a high
level. Therefore, thalassemic patients should be
encourage to inject by this method.
Conclusion: Desferrioxamine administration by
retained scalp-vein into subcutaneous in thalassemic
patients can reduce the number of injection. The use
of desferrioxamine injection technique was safely
carried out and was high satisfaction by patients and
caregivers.
